Necromancy is a realm that is completely immersed in the underworld. Its practitioners are referred to as necromancers. Like sorcery, the realm of necromancy draws its power from channeling astral energy. The difference lies in the fact that, whereas mages specialize in the use of the elements and energy from the astral plane that coincides with the living world, necromancers specialize in the use of energy from the astral plane that coincides with the underworld. A necromancer's expertise is not with elements or earthly components, but purely with the undead. They specifically derive their power through a reciprocal connection to the miserable denizens of the underworld. Through the undead, necromancers have access to knowledge and powers of great magnitude. Through the necromancers, the undead gain access to the mortal world - a release from their prison. A necromancer is able to create a path that allows a spirit of the underworld to manifest itself using the dead as a vehicle. Due to the nature of necromancy, its guilds tend to be comprised of ranks of self-serving practitioners. The arrangement between necromancers and the underworld is one not of loyalty, but serves only to pursue separate interests. As a result of the general lack of ethics, disputes and divisions are common within guilds. The consequence of these tendencies is that there are more guilds within necromancy than within any other realm of magic. These guilds are therefore smaller in size, tend to be very elitist, and are quite elusive - frequently changing their base. However, sometimes vanity gets the best of the necromancer and, on rare occasion, you may find a congregation of them in the darkest and most vile clubs of the underground. |
